Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. (Psalm 31:3 NIV)
You probably remember the parable told in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 7:23-29) about the wise person who builds their house on rock. Even when the storms come, the house remains standing because it is built on a strong foundation. The foolish person builds their house on sand, and their house tumbles when the rain and wind and storms come. The song “My Life Flows On in Endless Song” encourages us to build our lives with Christ as our Foundation. With Christ as our cornerstone, we can cling to our Rock, even in times of storm.
“Rabbi Harold Kushner tells the story of being on the beach on a summer day, and watching a young boy and girl playing in the sand. They build an elaborate sand castle with gates and towers and internal passages. But then a big wave comes along and reduces it to a heap of wet sand. Kushner expected the children to burst into tears. But instead they ran to the shore, laughing and holding hands, ready to build another castle.
That moment taught Kushner this: ‘All the things in our lives, all the complicated structures we spend so much time and energy creating, are built on sand. Only our relationships to other people endure. Sooner or later, the wave will come along and knock down what we have worked so hard to build up. When that happens, only the person who has somebody’s hand to hold will be able to laugh’.”1, 2

My Life Flows On
My life flows on in endless song; above earth's lamentation,
I catch the sweet, though far-off hymn that hails a new creation.
No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that Rock I'm clinging.
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing?
Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear that music rining.
It finds an echo in my soul. How can I keep from singing?
What though my joys and comforts die? The Lord my Savior liveth.
What though the darkness gather round? Songs in the night he giveth.
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart, a fountain ever springing!
All things are mine since I am his! How can I keep from singing?
