The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. (Psalm 18:2 NIV)
“The psalmist David often refers to God as a rock. When pursued by King Saul and his soldiers, David found refuge in a rocky region of southern Palestine. But David knew that the Lord God was his real source of security.
“In southern Israel, near where David hid, stands the fortress Masada. It is built on top of a rocky mountain that rises sharply two thousand feet from its base. Herod the Great built this mighty fortress. Storehouses were constructed to provide supplies to last for ten years. Massive cisterns were hewn out of rock to hold thousands of gallons of water. It seemed impregnable. Yet in AD 73 the Roman Tenth Legion conquered it by building a ramp up the west side. In recent years archeologists have excavated the amazing ruins.
“No earthly fortress can provide lasting security. Only God is able to do this. In Christ He broke the power of Satan by His death and victorious resurrection. By faith in Him we have eternal life. We can sing with Martin Luther, ‘A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon.’”1
A mighty fortress is our God, A sword and shield victorious;
He breaks the cruel oppressor’s rod
And wins salvation glorious.
The old satanic foe Has sworn to work us woe.
With craft and dreadful might He arms himself to fight.
On earth he has no equal.
God’s Word forever shall abide, No thanks to foes, who fear it;
For God Himself fights by our side
With weapons of the Spirit.
Were they to take our house, Goods, honor, child, or spouse,
Though life be wrenched away, They cannot win the day.
The Kingdom’s ours forever!
