Will You Come and Follow Me
As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. Matthew 9:9 (NIV)
Jessie Schut had been asked to do the children's sermon. It was to be on Following Jesus, so she asked members of the congregation to take part in acting out the Bible story of Jesus calling the disciples. So, she began telling the story: Jesus called out, "Matthew, will you come and follow me?"
She said her heart sank as a teen came shuffling forward, mumbling, Yes, Jesus, I will follow you. One after another, "disciples" came forward as she called them, each one showing more stage fright than enthusiasm. That certainly wasn't what she had hoped for.
Finally, she called out, Peter, will you come and follow me? And John, the young man playing Peter, exploded from his pew, his face radiant with joy and excitement. Yes! Yes! he shouted as he danced up the aisle. He heartily embraced Jessie and the other "disciples", delighted to have been chosen by Jesus for this great privilege.
They were all silent. John is a member of Friendship Group, a ministry to people with mental impairments. Jessie says, John may never be able to do all that some of us can, but that day he became God's messenger to show us how to express the joy of following Christ.
Are WE as joyful?

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known,
will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?
Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me
Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name?
Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean, and do such as this unseen,
and admit to what I mean in you and you in me?
Will you love the 'you' you hide if I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same?
Will you use the faith you've found to reshape the world around,
through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me?
Christ, your summons echoes true when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you and never be the same.
In your company I'll go where your love and footsteps show.
Thus I'll move and live and grow in you and you in me.
