Unlike Pastor Olson, we didn’t climb any ladders in Sunday School this week, but we did learn that God loved us so much he gave us the Ten Commandments.
In the PreK/K classes, they used heart stickers to show how God’s first 3 commandments are about how we show our love to God and the last 7 commandments are about how we show our love to others. In the game “Heartscotch” (think hopscotch) they learned that not even one person can keep God’s laws perfectly, but that God will always forgive us when we are sorry.
Psalm 119:35 says, "Lead me on the path of your commandments, because I am happy with them.” The 1st – 5th graders were using the Ten Commandments to help them understand that the path God wants us to follow is the best way to live. They thought about temptations that could take them off the path and what the result might be. Even though there are consequences when we go off the path, God will forgive us. We can always get back on the right path.
Sunday School Outreach
This was the first week of our new Sunday School outreach project—Clinic with a Heart, a free health clinic that serves people in Lancaster County.
How is Southwood involved? Southwood sponsors the third Tuesday and third Thursday night clinics. When you sponsor a clinic it means that the doctors, dentists, ophthalmologists, physical therapists, mental health counselor, nurses, lab techs and other volunteers for intake, discharge and guiding people through the process are Southwood members that donate their time so this clinic can be free to the people who need medical care. Southwood also pays for all the medicine that is prescribed on their nights.
How can Sunday School kids help?
- We would like to give each child who visits the Clinic a story book. We are asking students to bring a new book to put in the bookcase in the entryway to Sunday School (where the goat pen was). Book stickers will be available for students to put in the books they bring. They can sign their name so the children know that their book was given by someone from Southwood.
- Our Sunday School offerings will go to pay for prescriptions for Clinic patients. Check out the giant pill bottle that sits on top of the bookcase to find out how much money we have collected from our offerings.
