In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. Genesis 1:1-3
The Bible begins, not with the chosen people, but with the entire creation. The people of Israel are not in view until the end of Genesis 11. In other words, this beginning provides the reader with a universal frame of reference through which to interpret everything that follows. What happens in the rest of the Bible is in a basic sense related to the entire creation.
God's purposes at work among the people of Israel and in the person of Jesus Christ have to do with all of God's good creation. In the words of John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only son."
We are beginning our study of this important first book of the Bible this Wednesday night (November 5th) at 6:30 p.m. We'll meet in the Youth Room. There will be a short presentation as well as group discussion and questions.
I hope you can join us.
